  2. Harkin’s Last Act?

Comments Off on Harkin’s Last Act?

WASHINGTON — With just weeks left before he retires from Congress, Senator Tom Harkin has finalized his proposal to rewrite the Higher Education Act.

Harkin, the Iowa Democrat who chairs the Senate education committee, on Thursday filed an 874-page bill to reauthorize the main federal law governing higher education.

  3. Celebrating 100 Years

Comments Off on Celebrating 100 Years

“Academic freedom” was still a new idea when John Dewey, Arthur O. Lovejoy, and other prominent scholars founded the American Association of University Professors in 1915. Establishing academic freedom as a cornerstone of higher education has been just one of the AAUP’s many achievements in the hundred years since its founding. The standards developed by the AAUP have been adopted by colleges and universities across the country, shaping a higher education system that is renowned for excellence in teaching and research. The AAUP is marking its centennial by highlighting its historical role in establishing the principles that govern the academic profession.

  4. Civility

    Comments Off on Civility

The AAUP has defended the right of faculty members to speak as citizens—that is, “to address the larger community with regard to any matter of social, political, economic or other interest without institutional discipline or restraint”—since its inception. Freedom of extramural utterance is a constitutive part of the American conception of academic freedom, and the AAUP has investigated and censured many institutions for dismissing faculty members over their extramural utterances. Recent calls by university administrators for civility have raised concerns over their potential to restrict extramural speech of faculty members. Some of these calls have claimed a relationship between civility in extramural utterances and in the classroom. Over the years, the Association has repeatedly addressed related concerns in policy statements, for which we provide central quotes and links to full statements below.

  6. HEP Reminder

2014 Health Enhancement Program:  SEVEN WEEKS LEFT

The deadline to complete 2014 Health Enhancement Program (HEP) requirements – by Dec. 31, 2014 – is exactly seven weeks away if you or any dependents haven’t already done so.

NEW:  We have heard from several physician groups – with locations in every region in Connecticut – who say they can accommodate HEP participants who still need a HEP preventive exam (commonly known as a standard physical exam) before the deadline.

If you or anyone in your household is having trouble scheduling an outstanding physical/preventive exam with your doctor before the end of the year, click this link for a list of physicians that say they can accommodate you:

    www.osc.ct.gov/HEP/providers.htm

    Check your status

If you’re unsure about your status, you can check your status online at www.cthep.com at any time. Be sure to have dependents do the same.

Please remember that to continue receiving the financial advantages of HEP, every individual in the household must meet all requirements for both preventive and chronic condition(s), if applicable.

    What is a preventive exam?

Many HEP participants are due for a “preventive exam.” This is your routine physical, usually with your primary care provider, and should include lab work, particularly a cholesterol screening.

Be sure to tell your physician that you want a full routine physical and cholesterol screening, and you do NOT need to wait 365 days from last year’s physical for it to be covered.

    Don’t forget your dental!

This is a reminder that HEP participants who are on the state dental plan must complete at least one dental cleaning per year. Your dental compliance should be reflected in the online HEP portal, so please check your status at www.cthep.com to verify whether you’ve already completed your dental requirement this year.

For questions, please contact Care Management Solutions toll free at (877) 687-1448.  HEP representatives will be available Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We look forward to another successful year in HEP!

  7. UConn Foundation To Double Amount Raised For Scholarships

Comments Off on UConn Foundation To Double Amount Raised For Scholarships

The UConn Foundation has agreed on a five-year, $150 million fundraising initiative that will double the amount of money the foundation usually raises each year for scholarships.

The initiative includes $50 million in scholarships that will be paid out over the next decade and a $100 million endowment that foundation officials say will yield about $5 million in scholarships in perpetuity.

  8. Budget chief: Some tax cuts may have to wait; CT colleges likely to face cuts

Comments Off on Budget chief: Some tax cuts may have to wait; CT colleges likely to face cuts

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s budget director acknowledged Monday there’s little likelihood all of the tax relief promised on the campaign trail can be provided in the next state budget, which faces a major deficit projection.

But Office of Policy and Management Secretary Benjamin Barnes quickly added he believes those tax breaks, worth roughly $260 million, can be provided over the next four years.

And while the governor promised new tax relief for college graduates struggling with student loan debt, Barnes said Connecticut’s public colleges and universities probably won’t be spared from emergency budget cuts due out this week.

Connecticut’s community colleges, the regional Connecticut State Universities system, and the University of Connecticut all ordered double-digit increases in tuition and fees over the course of Malloy’s last term in response to major cuts in state assistance.

    Traveler Permits:

Traveler permit applications for those who have requested reserved parking based on clinical or other operational needs are under final review by senior management. The Parking & Transportation office is expecting to receive the approved list from the task force in the very near future. Individuals who are approved for “traveler status” will receive a special sticker from the Parking & Transportation office designating their status. Approximately 35 spaces on the top floor of Garage 3 will be designated for “traveler” parking.

    Shuttle Bus Schedule Changes:

New shuttle bus schedules were implemented on Monday, November 3. The changes were based on your feedback, ridership data, and our continuous improvement efforts. We encourage everyone to review the new schedules as most of the routes have changes in departure times and pick-up/drop-off locations including extended Night Bus hours. The new schedules are posted on UConn Health Express and the Public Safety website. We will monitor ridership data and make adjustments if necessary.

As always, the UConn Health community is encouraged to send suggestions and questions to parking.transportation@uchc.edu.

    Thank you.
